Preparing for a Dig

Are you interested in volunteering at an archaeology dig, or enrolling in an archaeology field school? You may want to consider some of the items on the list below. They are either necessary, or needed for comfort, at most digs. The tools are available at most hardware stores.

Field Kit List:

1. Marshalltown trowel, approx. 5 inch pointing trowel (non-riveted).
2. Tape measure. Metric, not just English scale.
3. Small journal-sized notebook and clipboard, pens, pencils
4. Root clippers. Any small, handheld pair is fine
5. One old toothbrush you should replace anyway
6. Water container for yourself
7. Small cooler for your lunch
8. Cheap cotton work gloves
9. Bug spray (Deep Woods Off is suggested)
10. A raincoat or jacket/hat
11. Compass
12. Strong white string
13. Sharpie Pen
14. Baggies

NOTE: You may want to bring a knapsack and keep on hand your own first-aid kit, bee sting kit, an extra bandanna or two, toilet paper, Chapstick, a disposable camera, a magnifying glass, etc. Consider you’ll be in the woods for hours, and small things can make you a bit more comfortable. Some people bring kneepads.
